The Joys of Wanderlust

Written By: Alicia

I have always had a love for exploring new things, from a new restaurant down the block to the buried path off the normal worn trail. I have had the pleasure of having my wanderlust fulfilled many times with many different places. This time however is the first time I have had the opportunity to explore outside the country without the safety of my own family.
The whole adventure has been thrilling! I am revisiting old sites I have seen before with a new twist of knowledge gained from studying archaeology, anthropology, and culture. In less than fourteen years a Mayan ruin I climbed has been closed to the public.  I apparently had a once in a lifetime opportunity at eight years old and didn't even know it. I am amazed by the concept of time kept by the ancient Mayans and how well they could play with and understand astronomy.  They had such control over the concept that they could make the sun slither down the edge of their temples or play peek a boo through windows just by the position they purposely placed them in.  I will always be in awe by their vast knowledge.
On a slightly different note. I must tell you about my favorite place. Not the Yucatan or Mexico but this Hacienda. It is breathtaking. It is like a different place and time. There is a bottleneck cenote to feed the water source under the pool. Currently there are two completely renovated buildings and a third will be finished  by the 18th when we arrive back. I have been taking pictures but they don't even do this place justice. It is not only the scenic view but the feel of leaving all worries and rapid pace things behind.  The owner has plans to rent it out once it is fully renovated and it would be one of those perfect leave your world behind getaways. It is within driving distance of historical sites, while also being a historical site itself. I would come back here. This place makes me want to write. I hear the stories starting in my head from just sitting on the hammock chair swing and discussing our studies. Since I am a double major in English and Anthropology that is always a good thing! This is a completely different world. The only thing I could live without would be the tarantulas and scorpions, I will just have to bring someone with me to deal with the major creepy crawleys!
